\nJason Bateman is this year\u2019s Emmy overachiever, nominated for lead limited series actor and limited series directing on Netflix\u2019s \u201cBlack Rabbit,\u201d and as both supporting actor and executive producer on another limited series, HBO Max\u2019s \u201cDTF St. Louis.\u201d So where does the multi-hyphenate\u2019s brain reside more in these days, as an actor or director?<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThey are in both worlds at the same time, but they kind of always have been,\u201d Bateman tells Variety<\/em>\u2018s Awards Circuit Podcast. \u201cThat\u2019s why I was so drawn to having the official job of directing. Acting at an early age became so comfortable for me that I was able to really observe all the incredible work going around me. All the technical work of the camera and sound and lighting and what might be happening with editing later. So I\u2019ve always thought about all of that \u2014 what a team it takes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBateman, of course, has been acting since he was a child \u2014 \u201cLittle House on the Prairie,\u201d \u201cSilver Spoons,\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s Your Move\u201d and even \u201cThe Hogan Family\u201d as a teen. But he also started looking at directing as a young actor.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m enormously grateful that I\u2019m still working in this industry in this town,\u201d he says. \u201cI mean, I\u2019ve gained a lot of experience in this business, and one of the things that\u2019s really clear to me is that the best people are not guaranteed employment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBateman, of course, saw that firsthand in the lean years that came prior to \u201cArrested Development,\u201d which set his career on a new, lucrative course that eventually included smashes like Netflix\u2019s \u201cOzark,\u201d his podcast \u201cSmartLess\u201d with buddies Will Arnett and Sean Hayes, and then most recently the back-to-back success of \u201cBlack Rabbit\u201d and \u201cDTF St. Louis.\u201d Bateman talked about all that, as well as his next project \u2014 and he took the Awards Circuit Podcast 10 Questions Quiz! \u2014 on this edition.<\/p>\n
