\nJames Gray has revealed that the released version of his 2019 Brad Pitt-starring \u201cAd Astra\u201d was not his cut \u2014\u00a0and was actually made longer than he wanted by the studio, 20th Century Fox. <\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking in Cannes to Brut to promote his latest film at the festival, \u201cPaper Tiger,\u201d the director didn\u2019t hold back when it came to discussing the sci-fi, which went through extensive reshoots following poor test screenings. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI control everything completely on this [\u2018Paper Tiger\u2019] and, actually, I didn\u2019t on \u2018Ad Astra.\u2019 That film was taken away from me. That\u2019s not my cut of the movie,\u201d he said. \u201cYou get into discussions and debates, there\u2019s a studio, then the studio [20th Century Fox] got sold to Disney. You get caught in that stuff. The movie was $80 million, \u2018Paper Tiger\u2019 was $15 million.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tHe added: \u201cI like to work on that scale because I don\u2019t think it\u2019s productive for people to just change your movie around and you get the blame anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen asked his how his version differed to the studio\u2019s edit of \u201cAd Astra,\u201d he said there were considerable changes. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt would have been a very different movie,\u201d he said, adding: \u201cIt would be 12 minutes shorter. I\u2019m the only director who makes a shorter director\u2019s cut. I hope someday I\u2019ll do it. I mean, it\u2019s obviously not up to me, but I would love to do it \u2014 it would be thrilling for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cPaper Tiger,\u201d a 1980s crime drama starring Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson and Miles Teller, premiered in competition in Cannes. Despite solid reviews, it wasn\u2019t among the award winners. <\/p>\n
