His name is all over this year\u2019s nominations, via three very distinct projects: As an actor, he\u2019s nominated for outstanding comedy lead via Hulu\u2019s \u201cOnly Murders in the Building.\u201d (He also has a comedy series nom for the show as an executive producer.) As a game show host, he landed a nod for ABC\u2019s \u201cMatch Game.\u201d And then he\u2019s the subject of director Lawrence Kasdan\u2019s Netflix documentary \u201cMarty, Life Is Short,\u201d which scored three noms this year.\n\n\t\n\n<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=6457\">\u2018Sentimental Value\u2019 Star Anders Danielsen Lie and Anne Marie Ottersen Inducted Into the Haugesund Walk of Fame: \u2018It Feels Full Circle\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tShort isn\u2019t actually a part of the production team on \u201cMarty, Life Is Short,\u201d so he won\u2019t get an Emmy if it wins for outstanding documentary or nonfiction special. But he gave the film, and Kasdan \u2014 whom he\u2019s known for 40 years \u2014 his full support.\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201c[Kasdan] phoned and said that he and Ron Howard and Imagine would love to do this documentary on me, and I kind of went, \u2018I don\u2019t know, I\u2019ve written a book, I\u2019m Canadian, we\u2019re a little more reserved, let me think about it,\u2019\u201d Short says. Kasdan then left an eight-minute message explaining why Short\u2019s story \u2014 about celebrating life, using humor to work through grief and more \u2014 was an important one to share.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tKasdan also knew Short had a ton of material to mine: \u201cThrough all these years, I\u2019ve always had a camcorder,\u201d Short says. \u201cWith all my kids, I would just film. And I\u2019d have them transferred to DVD. Because of my relationship and trust with him, I was able to take these shelves of movies and just say, \u2018here you go.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tNot only that, but Steven Spielberg also sent over a ton of home movies he had made with Short in them. \u201cSo Larry had a great little treasure trove of stuff,\u201d Short says.\n\n\t\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWhen Short\u2019s daughter Katherine died in February, Kasdan told the star that Netflix could hold back the documentary\u2019s release if the star wasn\u2019t comfortable with it at that moment. And it\u2019s a disease. Some diseases are terminal, whether they\u2019re cancer or mental health. And so, I said, \u2018I think we should proceed.\u2019 And he said, \u2018I think we should too.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAnd since the film premiered globally in May, Short says he\u2019s heard from many folks on how they appreciated seeing how he navigated through such tremendous loss in his life.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tCoincidentally, Short is also seen quite a bit in the Amazon doc \u201cJohn Candy: I Like Me,\u201d about his pal and \u201cSCTV\u201d co-star, which is competing against \u201cMarty, Life Is Short\u201d in this year\u2019s Emmys documentary or nonfiction special category. Short says it was Candy who inspired him to start his home video habit. \u201cIn 1981, I got a VHS machine, and I went, \u2018what am I doing? John has Betamax. We can\u2019t exchange movies! So I went back and traded my VHS for Beta. You don\u2019t even want to know my LaserDisc collection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAs for \u201cMatch Game,\u201d Short says there are no future seasons in the works for him, but \u201cnever say never.\u201d And he\u2019s tightlipped on what to expect for next season\u2019s \u201cOnly Murders\u201d other than its move to London and a new batch of A-list guest stars.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBut he\u2019ll be back in L.A. next month for sure, given his tremendous showing as an Emmy nominee. \u201cLet\u2019s do the clich\u00e9, it\u2019s a tremendous honor to be recognized by your peers,\u201d he says.
