Discovery Deal, Says He\u2019ll Meet When They \u2018Stop Playing Games\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tSome picks \u2013 announced at the Norwegian International Film Festival Haugesund \u2013 come as no surprise, as Joachim Trier\u2019s Oscar-winning \u201cSentimental Value\u201d and Hlynur P\u00e1lmason\u2019s \u201cThe Love That Remains\u201d have already enjoyed significant festival success.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHowever, the jury consisting of Jacob Ludvigsen, Jan Berg J\u00f8rgensen, Marjo Pipinen, J\u00f3na Finnsd\u00f3ttir, Anne Gjelsvik and Jonas Holmberg also recognized Jeanette Nordahl\u2019s \u201cBeginnings,\u201d B\u00fai Dam\u2019s \u201cBirita,\u201d \u201cA Light That Never Goes Out\u201d by Lauri-Matti Parppei and \u201cKevlar Soul\u201d directed by Maria Eriksson-Hecht.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cKevlar Soul\u201d focuses on two brothers who grow up terrorized by their alcoholic father. <\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cWe are deeply honored by this nomination,\u201d said Eriksson-Hecht.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cBeing selected as Sweden\u2019s entry for the Nordic Council Film Prize means a great deal to everyone involved, both in front of and behind the camera. We hope this recognition will help more people discover and see the film, bringing new attention to its themes.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cBeginnings,\u201d starring Trine Dyrholm and David Dencik, follows a couple that\u2019s about to divorce \u2013 until Ane suffers a stroke.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cWe wanted to explore the absolute loss of control, seen from all perspectives within a family. What happens when illness strikes, and how do we relate to each other when everything has changed?,\u201d noted Nordahl, deciding to tell the story \u201cwithout sentimentality or judgement, focusing on simple, everyday situations that might feel familiar.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cSo many families find themselves in this type of conflict, and our intention was to give them a film in which they could feel seen and validated. Now, as we move towards independence \u2013 something that our Icelandic sister Bj\u00f6rk encouraged us and Greenland to do in 2008 [in her song \u2018Declare Independence\u2019] \u2013 it feels important that we carve out a clear place for our own voice, our language, and our culture within the Nordic community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHe added: \u201cIn that sense, this film is rebellious \u2013 just like my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tOr like the protagonists of the music-heavy drama \u201cA Light That Never Goes Out\u201d by Lauri-Matti Parppei, who decide to start an experimental band, aka a \u201cparamilitary noise art collective.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0The film, which premiered at Cannes ACID, was a big winner at the Jussi Awards in its native Finland.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cMy background is in the Finnish underground and DIY music scene. I never expected that a film based on those experiences would suddenly touch people around the world. And travel across borders and continents,\u201d Parppei told\u00a0<em>Variety<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cAs a Finn, I\u2019ve always admired Nordic filmmakers and their long history of acclaimed cinema, even feeling a bit inferior. Even my favorite film of all time is from Sweden: \u2018Fucking \u00c5m\u00e5l\u2019 by Lukas Moodysson [also known as \u2018Show Me Love\u2019].
