\n\tDevelopment on the sequel is in early stages, with the cast and several key creative roles yet to be selected, according to a source close to the project. The intention of the filmmakers and the studio is to have Hudson and her co-star from the original, Matthew McConaughey, reprise their roles. The project is currently seeking a screenwriter, so casting will depend on the take.<\/p>\n

\n\tStacey Sher is also on board to produce alongside Hudson through her Shiny Penny banner. Sher\u2019s extensive list of producer credits includes \u201cPulp Fiction,\u201d \u201cGattaca,\u201d \u201cErin Brockovich,\u201d \u201cVanilla Sky\u201d and \u201cDjango Unchained.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tReps for Hudson and McConaughey did not immediately respond to Variety<\/em>\u2018s request for comment. <\/p>\n

\n\tA follow-up to \u201cHow to Lose a Guy\u201d seemed inevitable, considering the Y2K nostalgia wave washing over Hollywood right now. 2026 has so far brought \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada 2,\u201d \u201cScary Movie\u201d and \u201cToy Story 5,\u201d all outsized box office hits that cashed in on late \u201990s and early 2000s source material. The throwbacks aren\u2019t slowing down either. \u201cPractical Magic 2\u201d and \u201cFocker-In-Law\u201d hit theaters soon, while \u201cShrek 5\u201d and Greta Gerwig\u2019s \u201cNarnia\u201d film are slated for 2027.<\/p>\n

\n\tPlot details for \u201cHow to Lose a Guy 2\u201d are still being ironed out. The 2003 original followed the cat-and-mouse romance between magazine columnist Andie Anderson, played by Hudson, and McConaughey\u2019s broish advertising executive Benjamin Barry. Andie, as research for an article about modern dating, seduces Benjamin and then transforms herself into the girlfriend from hell. Benjamin bets his boss he can make any woman fall for him, and Andie is his target. With a huge campaign on the line, he\u2019s determined to make things stick. Of course, true love blossoms from the absurd circumstances. Donald Petrie directed the film. Supporting cast members include Kathryn Hahn, Adam Goldberg, Thomas Lennon, Michael Michele and Shalom Harlow. The film grossed nearly $180 million worldwide on a reported $50 million budget and is considered an essential title in the rom-com genre.<\/p>\n

\n\tHudson\u2019s most recent big-screen role was in 2025\u2019s \u201cSong Sung Blue,\u201d for which she earned her second Oscar nomination. The first nod came for her iconic turn as Penny Lane in Cameron Crowe\u2019s \u201cAlmost Famous.\u201d She is also leading the sports comedy series \u201cRunning Point\u201d for Netflix. While \u201cHow to Lose a Guy 2\u201d has not been cast, Hudson\u2019s role as producer makes it easy to believe she is in the wings, waiting for the right deal to bring her back.<\/p>\n

\n\tOf course, if Hudson were involved, McConaughey would presumably follow suit. The Oscar winner, who recently described \u201cHow to Lose a Guy in 10 Days\u201c as an \u201canchor\u201d in the rom-com canon, has long been absent from the genre he was once closely associated with. He consciously distanced himself from romantic comedies in the 2010s, transforming his career with roles in critical dramas like \u201cMud,\u201d \u201cThe Wolf of Wall Street,\u201d \u201cInterstellar\u201d and \u201cDallas Buyers Club,\u201d which earned him the 2014 Best Actor Oscar. He only recently ended a six-year big-screen hiatus with the release of \u201cThe Rivals of Amziah King.\u201d<\/p>\n
