Beth Karas, a legal analyst in the Investigation Discovery docuseries \u201cThe Curious Case of Natalia Grace,\u201d says she\u2019s covered trials for over 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cSometimes there are twists that we can tell haven\u2019t been discovered. But I like the cases that aren\u2019t as well known because it\u2019s a new audience,\u201d Karas says. \u201cHow many times can you tell the same story over and over?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tJason Sarlanis, Warner. Bros Discovery\u2019s president of linear and streaming, describes the constant scramble for access: \u201cEighty different producers and filmmakers come to you with the same story. They\u2019re out there fighting 17 other production companies, other filmmakers, to get people to say yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThe Fall of Diddy\u201d executive producer Mary Robertson adds: \u201cOur goal and our obligation is to get it right. Sometimes, the timing for victims may not be right, no matter how careful producers may approach them to go on the record.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201c48 Hours\u201d correspondent Natalie Morales explains her approach: \u201cYou walk into that room and you just want them to feel like they can speak to you, and it really is just letting go of any preconceived notions. You almost basically have to dumb down the conversation like you haven\u2019t heard anything about this crime. You haven\u2019t heard anything about this case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tConversations about the ethics of true crime storytelling persist in the space, especially with critics who claim that the genre turns pain into product and entertainment. \u201cLost Women of Alaska\u201d executive producer Christina Douglas says: \u201cThe misnomer is that people think sensationalism equals entertainment. And I don\u2019t think that\u2019s true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThe victims\u2019 stories need to be told,\u201d Morales says. \u201cWe realize that we have an obligation when it comes to storytelling and reporting them factually, without the glorification or entertainment that a lot of people, I think, like to associate with true crime, which is not the case.
