But there are others who survive and find there\u2019s light on the other side,\u201d she told\u00a0<em>Variety<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tKernell, known for \u201cS\u00e1mi Blood\u201d and \u201cCharter,\u201d is also behind the script.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn the story, Ejva inherits her father\u2019s reindeer herd following his sudden death. She must grow up, quickly, with only the local leader Heaika eager to help. However, Heaika expects some things in return and isn\u2019t happy to see Ejva fall for his cousin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe highly anticipated film is set to premiere at Toronto and San Sebasti\u00e1n. It debuts its exclusive trailer here:<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn 2023, Kernell won the top award at the Co-Production Market at Haugesund\u2019s New Nordic Films industry sidebar for the film, which was then known as \u201cThe Curse: A Love Story.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cAfter the curse of your own silence, or the curse that doesn\u2019t allow you to speak up because you\u2019re afraid of how people will think of you if you confront them,\u201d she explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThen I realized: OK. I was like: \u2018This is her. This is the girl I\u2019ve written about.\u2019 But that meant I had to change the whole film, because she speaks another S\u00e1mi language than I do,\u201d explained Kernell.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cI have a S\u00e1mi father and a Swedish mother, and I grew up in a village outside of Ume\u00e5. There are many strong, tough women there. As a child, I admired them, and I also feared them a little bit,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cIt seemed like they could survive anything, and maybe they had to. In this community, you have a responsibility greater than yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tJust like Ejva, who suddenly needs to learn how to protect the herd and make her family proud, even when a violent attack leaves her struggling.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThis line from the title\u2026 It\u2019s something you say to young S\u00e1mi people who are reindeer herders. You need to make your heart harder in order to survive,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cMaybe that\u2019s how you get through difficult things and traumas and death \u2013 and a life that\u2019s very close to death.
