The complaint is the network\u2019s first legal case against an AI company seeking to protect its copyrights \u2014 and is believed to the first litigation in this area by a TV network \u2014 though news companies including the New York Times, Dow Jones (publisher of the Wall Street Journal) and the New York Post have filed similar lawsuits against Perplexity. Other news publishers, including Time and USA Today Co. (formerly Gannett), have struck deals with the company.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tA CNN spokesperson said that while the network \u201cactively embraces the opportunities AI creates,\u201d Perplexity \u201cshould not be able to steal from entities that create the original content\u201d\u00a0the company \u201cexploits.\u201d Meta announced a content-licensing deal with CNN last December.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThe public\u00a0rely\u00a0on high-quality news journalism reported by human beings to understand their world, which is\u00a0frequently\u00a0dangerous and expensive to produce,\u201d\u00a0the CNN rep said in a statement. \u201cCommercial operators can and must pay to make use of it. We prefer that they do so through sensible licensing arrangements, but if they refuse to do that as Perplexity has so far refused to do, they will have to pay through legal damages. There is no free option.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tA Perplexity spokesperson did not respond to an immediate request for comment. In response to the Dow Jones lawsuit in 2024, the company said the move \u201creflects an adversarial posture between media and tech that is \u2014 while depressingly familiar \u2014 fundamentally shortsighted, unnecessary and self-defeating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn the 54-page federal complaint, CNN points to Perplexity\u2019s former ads claiming that it helps users skip the \u201cextra steps and clicks\u201d\u00a0they\u2019d normally take to access news content. The network said it spoke to Perplexity about a deal last year but could not agree on terms, including restrictions on how the company\u2019s chatbot uses CNN\u2019s content. After negotiations fell through, the network blocked Perplexity\u2019s scraping bot from accessing its content.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=877\">Sherlock Nemesis Moriarty Set for Drama Series From Fremantle, Archery Pictures<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cAs a result, before and after Perplexity\u2019s negotiations with CNN, Perplexity knew that it was not\u00a0permitted\u00a0to\u00a0access CNN\u2019s content or to use its trademarks or service marks,\u201d\u00a0the complaint said.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe network also claimed Perplexity falsely advertised a continued relationship with CNN by claiming users can upgrade to its \u201cComet Plus\u201d\u00a0tier to get access to CNN\u2019s premium content. However, since no such relationship exists, Perplexity is violating CNN\u2019s trademark, the network alleged.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cPerplexity\u2019s use infringes CNN\u2019s exclusive rights in its federally registered trademarks, and has caused and is likely to cause confusion, mistake, or deception as to whether the articles Perplexity provides are associated or affiliated with, or are sponsored, endorsed, or approved by CNN,\u201d the complaint reads. \u201cPerplexity\u2019s use is intended to reap the benefit of consumers\u2019 trust in CNN.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tCNN asked the court to award it statutory damages and discontinue Perplexity from using its content.
