\nJohn Travolta has wholeheartedly embraced the beret as his trademark look since his headline-making appearances at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this month. At the DGA premiere Thursday of his directing debut \u201cPropeller One-Way Night Coach,\u201d he told Variety<\/em>\u2018s Marc Malkin that he adopted the headwear idea to help feel like a director.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe beret has been around for 800 years,\u201d Travolta told Malkin. \u201cYou know, the military \u2014 it\u2019s an old school thing. I looked at all the photographs of me for 50 years and I can\u2019t tell you the difference. I started to not be able to differentiate and I said \u2018well, you\u2019re not an actor really.\u2019 <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSo I looked up all the old school directors and they all had berets and sometimes glasses and it was very it was clich\u00e9 but in a wonderful way \u2014 they were probably reflecting painters and musicians of the type.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tTravolta confided to Malkin that he now has at least 12 of the caps, which he says landed him on the Vogue, GQ and Harper\u2019s Bazaar best-dressed lists from Cannes.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cGuys don\u2019t have enough to do,\u201d Travolta said. \u201cThey\u2019re putting men in skirts because there\u2019s a lack of something there\u2026why not change it up? We can have fun too.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe \u201cSaturday Night Fever\u201d star also said he helped style his daughter Ella, who has been accompanying him on the carpets and appears in the film. \u201cWe could have done twin berets but today we decided to go Brigitte Bardot.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBased on Travolta\u2019s 1997 children\u2019s book, \u201cPropeller One-Way Night Coach\u201d is a one-hour film available to stream on AppleTV+.<\/p>\n

\n\tFashion has been on his mind since his early years, Travolta said. \u201cMy brother-in-law worked for Vogue in the \u201960s and Harper\u2019s Bazaar and he would style me as a teenager. I had my first bell bottoms, my first wide belt, my first double breasted suit. I looked like Warren Beatty, Bonnie and Clyde. So I\u2019m very aware of how [women] have more options than we do.\u201d<\/p>\n
