{"id":992,"date":"2026-05-29T21:46:06","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T21:46:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=992"},"modified":"2026-05-29T21:46:06","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T21:46:06","slug":"wednesday-beef-and-stranger-things-artisans-reveal-the-essential-tools-they-need-to-do-their-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=992","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Wednesday,\u2019 \u2018Beef\u2019 and \u2018Stranger Things\u2019 Artisans Reveal the Essential Tools They Need to Do Their Jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\n\tEvery artist needs one key tool to do their job.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn a special edition of <em>Variety\u2019s<\/em> For the Love of the Craft presented by Netflix, senior artisans editor Jazz Tangcay caught up with the artisans behind some of the streamer\u2019s biggest shows to learn about the one essential they need to do their work.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/relocationobserver.com\/?p=990\">Hannah Einbinder Speaks Out Against Spencer Pratt\u2019s Mayoral Campaign: \u2018It\u2019s Important to Resist That\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cStranger Things\u201d makeup department head Eryn Kruger Mekash revealed brushes were a must-have: \u201cI could not do my job without would be a simple brush, whether it be an airbrush or just a handheld brush.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIt\u2019s all about simplicity, too, for \u201cWednesday\u2019s\u201d co-music supervisor Jen Malone. Her go-to is a notebook and an automatic pencil. \u201cI can\u2019t live without my very special pad.\u201d However, it\u2019s not just any notepad. \u201cIt has to be five by seven; cannot be eight by 10. It has to be hard cover, it has to have spirals and it has to only be with one of these pencils. That\u2019s it. Nothing else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWhat she writes in her notepad remains \u201ctop secret\u201d though. Malone\u2019s colleague and co-music supervisor on the show, Nicole Weisberg simply needs \u201csparkling water every hour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tTechnological advancements help \u201cBeef\u201d editors Laura Zempel and Lauren Connolly when it comes to watching dailies and deciding on the best takes. Zempel says, \u201cThe most important thing that we used this season of editing \u2018Beef\u2019 was ScriptSync.\u201d She explains that it\u2019s a way to keep track of all of the lines that were said. \u201cWe can take notes with selects that our showrunner likes, keep track of improv. It\u2019s just a really nice way to stay organized while we\u2019re editing our scenes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tConnolly adds, \u201cIt creates this visual roadmap to all of the footage and the tone of \u2018Beef\u2019 is really in all the detail and it allows us to dive in while still working really quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe pair also use scene cards which they create for every single scene. Connolly says, \u201cIt allows us to see all the different character arcs clearly up on the wall. So you can use that to track things even if you want to do a small restructure. It\u2019s really helpful just to see the episodes as a whole all at once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tProduction designer Matthew Flood Ferguson worked on building the world of a serial killer in \u201cMonster: The Ed Gein Story,\u201d and for that, he dove into an array of books. \u201cI have quite a few film books, books on photography and architecture and I have to have them on every job. Even if it doesn\u2019t pertain to the job that I\u2019m on, I still need them because you never know,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThose books are his most valuable asset. Magnum Cinema covers 50 years of movie making. \u201cSometimes I may be like, \u2018What am I doing? She carries a mini tape measure everywhere she goes and it\u2019s attached to her car keys. \u201cI always use it. I like to play with scale so you never know when you have to measure a lamp or you have to measure the depth of a table or the depth of a shelf or the height of a shelf. This is the one tool I cannot live without.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHas she ever lost her keys? Not yet. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t be able to work if I lost my keys,\u201d she laughs.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAs with everyone, Barrie Gower, makeup effects department head on \u201cStranger Things,\u201d needs his crew. \u201cI cannot do my job without a tremendous amount of talent to people that are around me,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m very fortunate and gracious every single day and grateful every single day for their help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cWednesday\u201d visual effects supervisor Tom Turnbull agreed that his crew was what he needed most.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cA good night\u2019s sleep,\u201d he says at first, adding, \u201cIt\u2019s really my crew. Without them, I wouldn\u2019t have a day to even start.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWith an extensive body of work behind the artisans, Tangcay also asked them what audiences should watch to get to know them.
