Buyers will get their first look at the series at the Access Canada Summit, held as part of the Toronto Film Festival’s inaugural market.

The series translates the world of Asian male pageantry into a rags-to-riches competition format. Contestants face challenges built around performance, style, talent and showmanship as they transform their look and image, before a live pageant finale crowns a winner.

Media Trifecta’s Kevin Healey, chief creative officer, and Sharone Ostrovsky, chief executive, are steering the project alongside Viral Nation programming chief Paul Telner and an Octagon Metatainment team led by Justina Shih, Simon Yin, Jonathan Wong and Dylan St Aubin.

“From the beginning, we believed ‘Rags 2 Richmond’ had the potential to become much more than a vertical series,” said Telner. “Jonathan and the team created a story that resonated because it was authentic, culturally specific, and deeply personal – anchored by an incredible soundtrack. At Viral Nation, we’re focused on helping creators transform their ideas into scalable entertainment properties, and ‘Rags 2 Richmond’ is a powerful example of how creator-led IP can evolve across formats into enduring franchises.”

The franchise grew out of Wong, Shih and Yin’s own experiences competing in and observing Asian beauty pageants and talent contests held across North America and Asia. Canadians make up an estimated 40% of the winners in that circuit, many of them from Richmond, British Columbia, which inspired the franchise’s name.

As a vertical series, the property ranked among the top-performing independent titles in the microdrama category, pulling in over nine million views on Instagram within its debut month. Distribution followed through Viddsee, along with brand tie-ins involving Air Canada and K-Swiss.

“‘Rags 2 Richmond’ represents the next generation of entertainment franchises – stories that begin with creators, build passionate audiences, and expand organically across formats,” said Healey. “We’re excited to partner with Viral Nation, Jonathan Wong, and Justina Shih to bring this next chapter of the ‘Rags 2 Richmond’ universe to life through competition-format storytelling.”

Ostrovsky said she was drawn to the project by its stories and its look inside a world most North American audiences know little about, despite its popularity across Asia. “Working with the star-level producing teams behind ‘Rags 2 Richmond’ and Viral Nation has felt like everything creating should be about: passion, storytelling, risk-taking,” she said. “We’re thrilled to introduce this next chapter to buyers at the Access Canada Summit.”

The franchise’s move into feature film came earlier this year, with Wong topping the cast. That cast is led by Wong, joined by Eric Tsang (“Infernal Affairs”), Nancy Sit (“God of Cookery”), Shannon Kook (“The Conjuring”) and Jennifer Tong (“Fakes”). That production wrapped in late 2025, and the film is set to screen at the Toronto market while distribution talks continue.

“This project started as a proof of concept online, because entertainment decision-makers had no frame of reference for what it could become,” Wong said. “But when a passionate global community of champions and supporters started to form around the music and storytelling, we knew we were onto something.”

“Speaking as a local, what’s been accomplished here in the past two years is unique, both in vision and speed,” said St Aubin, who worked on the vertical series as an editor before producing the feature film. “Jon, Justina, and Simon arrived with the goal of elevating our city and its talent on their own merits, and the momentum they’ve achieved – from a vertical series, to a feature film, and now a competition series – has given us a global platform in record time. There’s a proven infrastructure in Vancouver that deserves to be tapped, and this team’s fresh perspective has set that in motion in meaningful fashion.”

K-Swiss’s role in the franchise has grown as well, shifting from a product placement in the film to commissioning Wong for an anthem marking the brand’s 60th anniversary.
